SUNDA KELAPA

Better known as Pasar Ikan or Fish Market, Sunda Kelapa is set in the mouth of the Ciliwung river. Formerly a port city where the Portuguese traded with the Hindu Pajajaran kingdom at the beginning of the 16th century.

Dutch domination of Indonesia began in this area. The remains of Batavia castle, an old fort ang a Dutch East Indies Company trading post can still be seen.

Sunda Kelapa is at present a fishermen’s wharf and inter island port. Tall masted Bugis schooners drom South Sulawesi anchoring there offer a picturesque scene. They belong ti one of the last fleets of sail boats in the world and still ply the seas between the island as they did centuries ago carrying merchandise
